A Simple iPad Case

Crocheted iPad Case by Katherine Gordon

On Monday afternoon Chris and I took a little trip to PCWorld to purchase an iPad for me :)
Obviously, the purpose of this iPad is to make it much easier for me to do my development work, which it has… but, it is also a rather fun, shiny, new toy for me :)

So, what did I do with my shiny, new iPad? (Once I’d finished my day’s work of course… ;) )

First off, I synced all my apps from my iPod touch onto it, which was surprisingly easy (one of the few days I didn’t find myself cursing iTunes!)  Then I had a rummage through the apps which I knew had iPad versions to marvel at their shiny graphics.  I did a little browsing of the App Store for iPad specific apps, but quickly found the interface frustrating compared to what I’m used to on my iPod and so I handed the device over to my partner who was desperate to have a play.

My first evening of owning an iPad, and what was I to do?  Crochet it a case of course! :D

I do a lot of crafting in my spare time, and anything which gets carried around eventually gets a little crocheted pouch to protect its screen.  With the iPad being quite so expensive, I figured I’d better get one made quickly so that I could take it out of the house without fear!  Last night I finally finished it (the iPad is rather a lot larger than my iPod or phone!) and I thought you might like to see…

Of course, you might also like to make one… so here’s the pattern :)   It starts off a little complex, but once you’ve mastered the first round it’s all easy!  Be sure to check that it looks like it will fit after the first few rounds as if your guage is too tight it might be a struggle to get on (equally, too loose and it might just fall out!)

Materials:

  • About 60g of DK yarn
  • 4mm crochet hook
  • 2 buttons
  • Needle (to sew buttons on and hide ends)

Instructions:
Chain 59
Row 1: sc twice into the second chain, sc to end, putting 2 sc into the last stitch. Now you want to crochet along the otherside of your starting chain, putting 2sc into the other side of the stitch you just crocheted, then sc to end, putting 2 sc into the last stitch again.  Slip stitch into first sc to join. (64 stitches)
Row 2: Chain 1, sc into the stitch you joined to, sc around, slip stitch into first sc to join.
Repeat Row 2 another 6 times.
Row 9: Chain 2, dc into the stitch you joined to, dc around, slip stitch into first dc to join.
Row 10-12: Chain 1, sc into the stitch you joined to, sc around, slip stitch into first sc to join.
Repear Rows 9-12 another 9 times.
Repeat Row 9 another 3 times.

The case should now fit your iPad quite nicely :)   Most of my cases I just finish here, but I thought the iPad should have a little button down flap, just to make it extra safe!

Row 1: sc into first 42 stitchs
Row 2: chain 1, turn, sc into second stitch, sc across to end, putting an sc dec in last two stitches.
Repeat Row 2 another 4 times.
The next row adds button holes.  For my buttons a 2 chain hole was sufficient, if your buttons are bigger you’ll want to leave a bigger hole!
Chain 1, turn, sc into second stitch, sc into first 5 stitches, chain 2, skip next 2 stitches and sc into the third. Count back 9 stitches from the other end and sc across to there. Chain 2, skip next 2 stitches and sc into the third, sc into the next 5 stitches and sc dec the last two.
Break yarn and weave in the ends.

Fold over the flap to work out the button positions and sew into place.

Hopefully, your case will now look like mine (or maybe even better!) :)
I would love to see any cases made with this pattern, please leave a comment below!  If you have any questions or need any clarification you can leave a comment too, I will do my best to get back to you :)

One Response to “A Simple iPad Case”

  1. [...] Since today I have been arguing with some silly image transformation nonsense, I took some time out this afternoon to write a little blog post for Chris. Being the strange person that I am, my first instinct when I got the iPad was to make it a case. Oddly, Chris seems quite content for me to put crochet patterns on his blog… I’m hoping for a recipe next time If you’d like to make a case for your iPad and know how to crochet then you can find some rambling and a crochet pattern over on his site – A Simple iPad Case.
